Spider Vein Removal | Reticular Vein Removal | Varicose Vein Treatment

In 1985, Dr. Laufer was the first physician to establish a vein treatment center in eastern Pennsylvania. He brings years of experience to the non-surgical treatment of all types of veins. He is one of only a handful of physicians in the country that treat very large, bulging varicose veins without surgery, using a safe and simple office procedure instead. Dr. Laufer has treated literally thousands of patients since 1985.
SPIDER VEIN REMOVAL
Spider veins, or telangiectasia, can occur on the face, the legs or any other part of the body. They are not really veins at all; they are enlarged capillaries in the skin.
Spider veins on the face are treated mainly by laser. This is discussed below. On the legs, however, sclerotherapy or laser can be used to eliminate spider veins. |

Sclerotherapy is considered the "gold standard" of leg vein treatment, since it has been around the longest, provides excellent and consistent results in almost all patients, and is very safe.
During sclerotherapy, a sclerosing solution is injected into the spider veins and compression is applied. This causes the spider veins to "glue" shut, shrink up and disappear. There is minimal discomfort, and even people who "hate needles" find the procedure easy to handle. The solution used is very safe, and the patient can return to normal activities immediately (high-impact exercises should be avoided for one week).
Dr. Laufer also uses the new GEMINI LASER to treat spider veins. This is one of the newest and most effective lasers available to treat spider veins. Treatment on the face is very simple and nearly painless. Treatment of leg veins causes minimal discomfort.
Note that there are different "light" technologies used to treat veins and other skin problems. Dr. Laufer uses only true laser technology, not pulsed light. There is a significant difference in these instruments.

RETICULAR VEIN REMOVAL
Reticular veins are the larger, blue-green veins just under the skin. They can be up to one-quarter inch in diameter. The veins on the back of the hand are examples of reticular veins.
On the legs, these veins can be eliminated using the same sclerotherapy technique as with spider veins. The only difference is that the compression is used longer. In addition, the new GEMINI LASER can also be used to eliminate these larger veins.
Besides the legs, Dr. Laufer has successfully eliminated reticular veins on the hands, abdomen, chest and breast.

VARICOSE VEIN TREATMENT
Varicose veins are large, bulging, occasionally painful veins on the legs. They sometimes go from the foot to the groin. Previously, treatment has consisted of leg elevation, compression stockings, vein stripping or "minimally invasive surgery." However, compression sclerotherapy (a simple, safe, office procedure) can be used as an alternative to any type of surgery, for even the largest varicose veins.
With compression sclerotherapy, a sclerosing solution is injected at certain points along the varicose vein. The patient feels a slight pinprick and a mild burning for a few seconds. Compression is then applied. This causes the varicose vein to "glue shut" and shrink up in about three weeks. The patient can resume work and normal activities immediately after treatment, and is encouraged to remain active. Weekly checkups are done to monitor progress.
Other "minimally invasive" surgical procedures are available. These involve applying an electric current or laser beam to the inside of the varicose vein, or slicing the vein into small pieces and suctioning it out through a catheter tube. These procedures are still surgical, and have their own risks associated with them. On the other hand, sclerotherapy is totally non-surgical, requiring no anesthesia.
Compression sclerotherapy has been a standard therapy for varicose veins in Europe and Canada for over forty years, with proven results. COMPRESSION SCLEROTHERAPY REQUIRES ABSOLUTELY NO SURGERY! It takes approximatley one-half hour in the office. There is no hospitalization or anesthesia, no scarring, minimal discomfort, and no time lost from work. Normal activities can be resumed immediately.
